Squares that are sufficiently deep are un-navigable, yet not necessarily void. I could theoretically mine a sufficiently deep trench around you such that you couldn't leave the square except with a speeder, or unless Barney fell into the trench. Were we to allow tunneling, we could have 3D regions that wrapped around each other...
