Yeah, this seems like a necessary fix or else tripping works wrong.

Wait, you'd let diagram-authors make arbitrary edits? Sounds great!
Here, how about if we all vote for my proposed diagram! Oh, hey, now
it's official. I'm gonna change it to allow me to make arbitrary
changes to the ruleset, make myself an instance of it, and then change
it back. Whee!
