All the torus shape means is that there is wraparound both horizontally and vertically.  For example:

a1 a2 a3 a4 a5
b1 b2 b3 b4 b5
c1 c2 c3 c4 c5
d1 d2 d3 d4 d5
e1 e2 e3 e4 e5

a1-5 are adjacent, respectively, to e1-e5.  Similarly, a-e1 are adjacent to a-e5.

And, if somebody doesn't want a toroidal Field, he can define it differently.
