Re: [spoon-discuss] proto: hexago

What if we made the go board a diamond, with hexagonal tiles?

                 A B C D E F G H I J K L M
             13 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13
            12 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12
           11 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11
          10 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10
          9 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9
         8 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8
        7 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7
       6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6
      5 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5
     4 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4
    3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3
   2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2
  1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1
   A B C D E F G H I J K L M

On the board above, each piece would be connected to the piece that was
formerly above it and to the left, or below it and to the right, as well as
its current neighbors.

Since the two extra liberties mean it's harder to capture, I'd say we just
declare that any group with at least as many pieces as it has liberties is
dead.

That makes two corners essentially impossible to hold - a dragon of three in that corner dies without any help from outside forces.

  3 . . .
 2 X . .
1 X X .
 A B C D

So the current board, under this proposal, looks like this:

                 A B C D E F G H I J K L M
             13 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13
            12 . . T . . . . . . T . . . 12
           11 . . . . . T . . . . . . . 11
          10 . . . . . . . . . I . . . 10
          9 . . . . . V . . . . . . . 9
         8 . . . . . V . V . . . . . 8
        7 . . . . . . V . . . . . . 7
       6 . . . . . . . . . . W . . 6
      5 . R . . . G . . . . . . . 5
     4 . . . R . . W . W . . . . 4
    3 . . . R . . R . . . . . . 3
   2 . . . . R . . . . . . . . 2
  1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1
   A B C D E F G H I J K L M

We could also do it the other way, making this instead:

   A B C D E F G H I J K L M
 13 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 13
  12 . . T . . . . . . T . . . 12
   11 . . . . . T . . . . . . . 11
    10 . . . . . . . . . I . . . 10
      9 . . . . . V . . . . . . . 9
       8 . . . . . V . V . . . . . 8
        7 . . . . . . V . . . . . . 7
         6 . . . . . . . . . . W . . 6
          5 . R . . . G . . . . . . . 5
           4 . . . R . . W . W . . . . 4
            3 . . . R . . R . . . . . . 3
             2 . . . . R . . . . . . . . 2
              1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1
                 A B C D E F G H I J K L M

What do people think?

I think I'm kind of partial to the current square one; however, creating some game circumstance in which the board might shift between these configurations could be fun... periodic/triggered world warping...
