[spoon-discuss] socities 2

Here's version 2 of my enhance and fix societies and corporations prop.

As I think we have all seen, redundacy can be both bad and good. Bad if it just creates clutter, or causes conflictions or competing rules. Good if it restates a truth where it's logical to restate it, and that truth could easily be accidentally affected by changes (like Less is More). So I both removed and added some redundancy.

Glotmorf, about your most recent email, I won't be replying to it as it contains many facts and opinions that no longer apply because of my changes. Let me know what you think of this version.

To help people figure it out, here's how societies and corporations do stuff, long story short: Socities and Corporations can do things, like (but not limited to) add or get rid of members or change it's charter/mission statement. Their charter/mission statement dictates when it does stuff (usually when a certain person or a group of members say it does). One analogy is that they are big robots, and each have different buttons, and some people have access to these buttons. Some buttons do a little, some do a lot.

Anyway, on with the show:

I don't propose the following, as it's on -discuss:

{{__Societies and Corporations__

Change the rule __Societies__ to read the following:
{{

A. Definition

In this rule, an Independent Entity is a Player, or a Society whose members are all Independent Entities. In this rule, a Dependent Entity is a Gremlin, a Corporation, or a Society whose members are all Independent Entities.
In this rule, an Entity is any of the two groups above.
A Society is a group of one or more entities who are Members of the Society.

B. Society Rules

A Society may have Internal Rules that are binding upon its Members. Internal Rules defer to game rules.

A Society's Internal Rules consist of Public Rules and Private Rules. Public Rules must be readable by all Players in the game, and are enforcible at the game level. Private Rules are freeform; maintenance and enforcement of Private rules is the responsibility of the Members of the Society. Internal Rules do not allow entities to perform actions in ways that they otherwise cannot. Internal Rules, Public Rules, and Private rules are seperate and distinct from the Rules of this game.

Societies may take actions permitted them in the rules. [[redundant, but I'm making it extra clear.]]

Public rules may include conditions in which a Society performs actions. (A Society is an Entity, so may perform actions, such as tranfer points, join another society, propose, own a corporation... etc, of course subject to all applicable rules and restrictions in the rules.). Societies take the actions their charters dictate, when legal.

C. Society Charter

A Society must have a Charter, which contains its public rules and may dictate what actions it takes. All charters must be listed in a public This collection of charters may contain other pertinent information, and the Administrator is encouraged to include such information as whether or not the Society still exists in this collection. The Charter is considered a game document, and is maintained by the Administrator in a collection of Charters. This charter may not also be a rule [[for simplicity; if you want to create a society through proposal, just create one, rather than through a rule]].

D. Society Actions
D.1 General

A Society may modify its Charter during the first 5 ndays of an nweek, if all of its members are Independent Entities. Such changes do not take place until the end of the nweek. [[But it won't, unless it's Charter states when it does. I suggest the Charter have something like "If a member of this Society proposes a change to this Society, and no other member objects to the change within 4 ndays, this Society makes the change", or something.]]

A Society may Accept any Entity that states e currently wishes to join it. When a Society Accepts an entity, that Entity becomes a Member of that Society. [[I suggest something like "This Society Accepts any entity wishing to join when the Leader of this Society states eir approval of the entity joining.]]

A Society may Oust any of its Members. Members who are Ousted cease to be Member of that Society.

Any Entity that has Points or BNS may transfer any positive amount of eir Points or BNS to any other Entity that has Points or BNS, respectively. Players may transfer a positive amount of eir Bandwidth to any Society. [[I think this is redundant, but the way the rules are, I don't know, and it could change anyway.]]

D.2 Proposals

Beginning in the nweek after the one in which they are created, Societies may submit proposals just as Players can; these are referred to as Society Proposals, or Club Props. If the properties of a a Society would be changed by the rules as a result of voting, and the Society does not have that property, all members of that society get that change divided by the number of members in that society with that property, with the remainder assigned to randomly among those members. If the previous sentence would create an infinite loop, in the opinion of the administrator, then the change is assigned as the Administrator sees fit, or not at all. Submitting a proposal does require the society to have and pay bandwidth, just as it does with players.

When a Society submits a Proposal, it must state a Member of the Society who can propose (if e were freed of bandwidth restrictions) to be the Presenter of the Proposal. If a property is referenced in a rule that the Society does not have but the Presenter does, the rule looks to the Presenter's property. Such properties may result in restrictions on the proposal, as defined by the rules (This is for BAC and such. I'm pretty much making it such that one person actually delivers the prop).

A Society may not make proposals if the number of Members not On Leave in the Society is less than 2, or the number of its Members is greater than one half the number of Off Leave Players in the game.

A Society may also revise or rescind eir current proposals, when it is not a voting period [[more redundancy, but just making sure]].

E. Leaving a Society
Membership in Societies is voluntary. Any Member of a Society may at any time Leave the Society, ceasing to be a Member of the Society. Public Rules cannot prevent a Member from leaving a Society, and once a Member has Leaves, the Public rules of that Society cease to bind em. (Until e joins again, if that ever happens).

If a Society ever has no Members, it ceases to exist, unless another Rule or the Society's Charter states otherwise. If a Society has no Members for the entirety of an nweek, is ceases to exist unless another rule states otherwise. (If it didn't exist for part of the nweek, then it didn't have members at that time. Just clarification.)

When a Society ceases to exist (indcluding if it is destroyed), unless its Charter, a passed proposal, or a rule state otherwise,

F. Resources

A Society may have the properties Bandwidth, Points, and/or BNS, if such is stated in the charter of that Society. Any Entity that has any of these may transfer any positive amount to any Society that has that property. The default values for these properties is 0.

Just to be perfectly clear, any Entity that has Points, Bandwidth, and/or BNS may transfer any positive amount of those to any other Entity that has the tranferred property.

G. Creating a Society

Once per nweek, a Player may create a Society, giving it a uniquely identifying name. Unless e specifies e does not, the creator of a society becomes a member of that Society.

[[If you want to invite some people into the society at the beginning, just have the Charter specify it'll automatically let those people join, and maybe include a time limit when that part is taken out.]]

[[You can still create via proposal. Societies are a part of the game, so props can affect them.]]
}}

Modify the rule __Corporations__ (1149/0) to read the following:
{{
A. Definitions
In this rule, an Independent Entity is a Player, or a Society whose members are all Independent Entities. In this rule, a Dependent Entity is a Gremlin, a Corporation, or a Society whose members are all Independent Entities.
In this rule, an Entity is any of the two groups above.
A Corporation is a group of zero or more entities who are Employees of the Corporation. A Corporation may also have an Owner and/or a Mission Statement.

B. Creation of Corporations
Once per nweek, if e has not done so already, an Entity may create a Corporation, giving it a uniquely identifying name. A Corporation may have Employees, which are entities, and an Owner, which is an Entity. The Owner may cause a Corporation to take legal actions. When creating a Corporation, it's creator may become its Owner if e chooses, and may specify its Mission Statement.

C. Corporation Actions
Entities may Apply to a Corporation, and may Withdraw an application.
Corporations may Hire an Entitity who has Applied to that Corporation and not subsequently Withdrawn eir application. When an Entity is Hired by a Corporation, e becomes an Employee of that Corporation. A Corporation may Fire an Employee. Any Employee who is Fired by a Corporation is no longer an Employee of that Corporation. An Employee of a Corporation may Quit that Corporation. Any Employee who Quits a Corporation is no longer an Employee of that Corporation. A Corporation may change it's Mission Statement. Such changes take effect at the end of the nweek in which the change is made.

A Corporation may confer and withdraw Positions to its Employees and Owner. Positions are not Titles or names, and do not affect the game in any way, except when a Rule, Proposal, Charter, or Mission Statement refers specifically to an Employee of that Company with that Position. (So having the Position "Glotmorf" in Corporation "Wonko's Slaves" wouldn't cause the Charter of the Society "Glotmorf's Fan Club" that refers to "Glotmorf" to refer to the person with that position; the Charter would have to refer to the "The Glotmorf of Wonko's Slaves". However, as long as it's made clear that the position is being referred to, the entire "of Corporation X" isn't needed each time.)

A Corporation may change it's Mission Statement.

Hiring an Entity, Firing an Employee, and changing its Mission Statement are Managerial Actions. [[This is to keep Mission Statements short.]]

D. Mission Statement
The Mission Statement of a Corporation, if it has one, may define conditions in which the Corporation takes Actions (such as hiring, fireing, payroll, etc). When the Mission Statement of a Corporation states it takes a legal Action, it takes the Action. may include conditions in which the Corporation's Mission Statement is changed. [[I suggest that some Corporations have in eir Mission Statement that it performs Actions upon its Owner saying it does.]]

If the Mission Statement of a Corporation confers a Position to the Owner of a Corporation purely because e is the owner, and that entity ceases to have that Position, e also ceases to be the Owner of that Corporation. If an entity gains that Position, all other Employees of the Corporation lose that position if they have it.

[[Some notes:
A Society named "Thingies, Inc. Board of Directors" would make a good owner for a Society named "Thingies, Inc.".
The Owner of a Corporation might also want to be an Employee.
A corporation doesn't need employees, an owner, or a mission statement, but won't be doing much without them.]]
}}

Change the following Societies to Corporations with the following properties (and if the named society does not exist, create one with the name given):
{{
Former Society: von Skippy Overproduction, Inc.
Owner: Baron von Skippy
Employees: Baron von Skippy, The Voice, Wild Card, Glotmorf, Wonko, bd, Squire of Dimness, Athena Mission Statement: von Skippy Overproduction, Inc. may also be referred to as vSOI. The Owner of vSOI has the position "CEO". If the CEO or all Employees of vSOI other than the CEO consent to have vSOI perform an action other than modify its Mission Statement, it does so. If at any time there is no CEO of vSOI, the Employee of vSOI who has been an employee for the longest time and is not the Owner of any other Company become the CEO, if one exists. If at any time the CEO of vSOI is the Owner of any other Society, e loses the position CEO. vSOI changes is Mission Statement if all its employees state it does.

Former Society: Athena's Society
Owner: Athena
Employees: Athena, bd, Lord Gregarian, BvS, Orc in a Spacesuit
Mission Statement: If Athena's Society has points or BNS greater than the number of Employees it has, Athena's Society transfers one of that propoerty to each of its members that can have that property. Athena's Society performs Managerial Actions when its Owner says it does.

Former Society: Wealthy Bastard Enterprises
Owner: Wonko [[Or Glotmorf, or a Society made up of both of them named "The Wealthy Bastards"]]
Employees: Wonko [[and/or Glotmorf]]
Mission Statement: Wealthy Bastard Enterprises may also be referred to as WBE. The Owner of WBE has the positions "Wealthy Bastard" and "Boss". At the end of each nweek, before Corporation Mission Statement changes are made, if WBE has enough BNS to do so, it transfers 55 BNS to the Boss and 11 BNS to each non-Boss Employee. WBE performs Managerial Actions when the Boss says it does.

Former Society: OrcTech
Owner: Orc In A Spacesuit
Employees: Orc In A Spacesuit, Bd, Baron von Skippy, Wonko
Mission Statement: The Owner of OrcTech has the position "Master". If there is no Master of OrcTech, if any Employees have the Position "Next in Line X", where X is an integer, the Employee with the lowest X becomes the new Master. If there are no such Employees, the Employee who has been an Employee the longest becomes the new Master. OrcTech performs Actions when its Owner says it does. If Orc In A Spacesuit is an Employee and is not the Master, e becomes the Master. If Orc In A Spacesuit is not an Employee of OrcTech, and e Applies to OrcTech, OrcTech automatically Hires him. If Orc In A Spacesuit changes eir name, OrcTech modifies its Mission Statement to replace all instances in it of "Orc In A Spacesuit" to eir new name.
}}
[[End corporations list]]

Change the Charter of M-Tek to read the following:
{{
Glotmorf is the Prez of M-Tek. M-Tek takes an action other than modifying its Charter upon the Prez saying it does, or after 2 ndays of 1/2 of the members of M-Tek say it does if the Prez does not veto the action. If there is no Prez of M-Tek, the member of M-Tek with the highest Entropy becomes the new Prez.
M-Tek uses the Unanimous Consent Standart Method for modifying its Charter.
At the beginning of each nweek's voting period, if M-Tek could have legally submited a proposal but did not, the Prez must give 5 points to each other member of M-Tek, if possible.
}}

[[The reason for the 2 nday limit is that otherwise the actions happen instantly, and any vetoes come afterwards, and therefore don't work because of retroactivity. Unless of course you veto before the action takes place, which I find unlikly to happen.]]

Change the Charter of The Secret Mookies to the following:
{{
'Lord Gregarian' is the High Mookie.
The High Mookies performs any actions the High Mookie says it does.
}}

Destroy all societies other than M-Tek, The Secret Mookies, and Insert Name Here.
}}
[[end proposal]]

I didn't modify the charter of INH, as I want to get this out, and I believe the charter is functional (although worded funny) with this prop.

Orc In A Spacesuit
hopes he fixed this enough.
