Re: [spoon-discuss] Another Band-Aid (TM) For Societies

From: "David E. Smith" <dave@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Just another random idea, folks. (I realize that I very rarely actually
get any comments on my props, but somehow, putting 'em out there makes me
feel better. :)

What do you meann no comments? I'm pretty sure I've said stuff. I know I made suggestions about your last one. Maybe you just didn't notice it in the deluge. I like the Gold Stars/Coins, but, just like everything else, want a control on it. For a lot of my own stuff, that control is you having a (final) say.

And speaking of comments... Have you taken a look at my new site at http://comp.uark.edu/~jas29/nomic ? While it is admittedly not fully functional yet, the Journal (which I'm doing to help you in the case of another deluge, or you miss something) is fully going, and I even have 2 versions up for you to choose from.

{{ __Another Band-Aid (TM) For Societies__

Insert in Rule 578, as subsection D.1.4:

{{
D.1.4. Monarchy

Any Player who is not a member of the Society may issue a Request For
Admittance (RFA) on a Public Forum. The Monarch of the Society may accept
or decline this RFA at eir sole discretion; this decision is final.

If a Society is created by player action, the Monarch is the player whose
action created the Society. If the Society is created by a proposal, the
Monarch is the player who authored the proposal. If a proposal is created
by an Unauthored Proposal, or a proposal with multiple authors (i.e. one
submitted by another Society), the proposal must specify the identity of
the Monarch, or else the Society shall not be created.
}}

In Rule 578, section G.2., remove the second paragraph. Insert in its
place:

"During the first nweek in which a Society created by player action
exists, the Society shall be treated as if it were created with the
"Monarchy" Standard Method for Joining, instead of any method (standard or
otherwise) specified in its charter."

[[ During those crucial first few ndays, the boss/prez/whatever gets to
run the show. This section is negotiable; it could create as many
problems as it solves. Comments? ]]

Insert at the end of the third paragraph of Rule 578, Section D.1. "A
Player consents to joining a Society only by explicitly giving eir consent
on a Public Forum. No player may be forced to join a Society against eir
will."

[[ there, is THAT clear enough? ]]

}}

That's clear enough. While I am not really opposed to this, I don't think it's enough. I think that Societies ought to be more limited in actual power, but not limited to a leader, while Companies should be in-game entities that the players deal with, but do not have some of the powers (like voting and proposing) of Societies.

Since you ruled that people can't be forced to join, that is in effect until someone rules a CFI to say otherwise, which I find unlikely to happen. Because of this, your prop won't do too much except require a Monarch. If you propose this, I'll say yes, unless someone else proposes a better solution first.
