On further reading of the proposal I am not entirely sure that we need it. Although it seems like a good idea, presumably the 'nearest' location is a location such that its distance to the origin is less than that of any other possible locations. We already have a reliable method for calculating the distance between two points according to a variety of metrics. I am willing to be convinced, however. The Grid is not an area in which I claim great expertise.
