Yup. Hexxagon does this on a hexagonally-tiled and -shaped board, with six
spaces on a side. You can have empty spaces in it that cannot be occupied,
if you so configure the board at the beginning. I'll send you a copy of the
shareware version if you like.

>Go ahead.

Regulations for Agoran Gamblers' Chess:

1. The Gameboard is an 8-by-8 grid.
2. The number of Contestants may not exceed two at any time.

[[This was because I couldn't figure out an elegant way of making it
multiplayer without people jumping in after they die before anyone has a
chance to win.]]

3. Should a Contestant cease to be a Contestant, this game of Agoran
Gamblers' Chess shall dissolve.
4. The Start of the Game shall be the time when there are two Contestants.
5. As Soon As Possible after the start of the game, the Contestmaster shall
randomly determine one of the two Contestants to be White. The other
Contestant shall be Black. White shall have the first turn.

[[In Agora, ASAP means you have one week.]]

6. While it is eir turn, a Contestant shall notify both the Contestmaster
and the other Contestant of eir action for that turn. Eir turn shall then
end, and eir opponent's turn shall begin. A Contestant must do this As Soon
As Possible after the start of eir turn.
7. If a player fails to notify the Contestmaster and the other Contestant
of eir action for eir turn within one week of the beginning of eir turn, eir
turn shall end and eir opponent's turn shall begin.
8. There are two legal actions for a turn: Placing and Moving.
9. During eir turn, a Contestant shall only perform one action.
10. To Place, a player must choose a piece from the Piecelist found in rule
12, transfer a number of Stems equal to that piece's Price to the
Contestmaster, state the purpose of this tranfer, and declare where on the
Gameboard that piece shall go.

[[Stems were, at least at the time, the standard currency. This is the part
that made it not work - I started the game *before* Money Grubbing Contests
were allowed, having written it up during the voting period.]]

11. Whenever a Contestant Captures a piece which is Royal, the Contestmaster
shall transfer to that player all Stems transferred to the Contestmaster for
the purpose of placing pieces. Once this has occurred, this game of Agoran
Gamblers' Chess shall dissolve.

[[Changing this is going to be an important step in multiplayerizing it.
Maybe you just get what the Royal piece's posessor paid, and simply delete
rule 2.]]

12. The following table shows the names, Prices, and Center Indeces of all
legal Pieces. It shall be known as the Piecelist.

Name Price CI
Rook 18 48
Bishop 10 48
Knight 6 32
Queen 28 96
King 7 20

13. All pieces shall move as in FIDE chess. The king, however, may move into
a position to be captured, and need not move out of such a position.
14. At the suggestion of any Contestant, the Contestmaster may add pieces to
the Piecelist. Such pieces must be included in the Piececlopedia section of
http://www.chessvariants.com/ and shall move as defined there. For any such
piece, the Contestmaster shall determine a Price and a Center Index.

[[www.chessvariants.com is also the source of the Center Index as a metric
for the value of a piece. I have no clue what my price formula was, but I
did have one.]]

15. The first piece placed by each Contestant shall be Royal.
16. No player may Place a piece such that it can Capture any other piece.
17. To Move, a player must choose a piece which they control which is on the
board, and move it in a manner which is legal for that piece. To Capture, a
player simply moves a piece onto a piece controlled by a different
Contestant, which is removed from the game.
18. This is a Points Contest. As Soon As Possible after the start of every
Nomic Month, the Contestmaster shall announce an award of PPP * 2, or the
maximum legal quantity for the recieving player to recieve, whichever is
smaller, to the Contestant whose pieces have the higher total Center Index.
19. If both Contestants agree to a change to the Regulations of Agoran
Gamblers' Chess, the Contestmaster must agree to it, thereby changing the
Regulations.

[[In Agora, the Regulations of a Contest change if the Contestants and
Contestmaster all agree.]]
