Gnomes were a fun time... but inserted into the modern version of the game, they'd be more like weapons and less something you collect and carefully mix, for the most part. So here's a revised version that treats them thus. This is a translation of the concept into fully modernized B terms. {In rule 5E49, replace the text {use (synonyms: stab, detonate, fire, shoot, etc) a Weapon} with {use (synonyms: stab, detonate, fire, shoot, throw, etc) a Weapon}. Create a rule entitled "Gnomes Defined": {Gnomes, which come in multiple varieties, are Targeted Weapons. Unless otherwise specified, they do 10 damage, have an infinite Range, and have two uses. Players may only throw Gnomes without objection within two ndays from the target. If a player intends to throw a Gnome at a target but the target objects within two ndays, the target is said to have "caught" the Gnome, and gains ownership of it. This does not cause the Gnome to be used. A player posting a message to the public forum indicating that they catch a Gnome that a player intends to throw at them is considered to have objected to its use. If a Gnome is thrown and not caught, it becomes Unowned and Resident on the same Square as the player at whom it was Thrown. Gnomes can also be Squeezed, which costs a use of the Gnome. Some types of Gnome may cause specific rule-defined effects when they are Squeezed. Gnomes have a Switch called "Wet", defaulting to Off, and a switch called Amorphous, defaulting to Off. A Gnome with its Amorphous Switch set to On is said to be an Amorphous Blob. Unowned Gnomes can be Resident on exactly one Square. If a Gnome becomes Unowned, it becomes Resident on the Square it was on when most recently Owned. If a Gnome is at any time Owned by a Colour, it becomes Unowned and becomes Resident on a Square of that Colour selected randomly by the Minister of Warfare. If a Player and a Gnome are Resident on the same Square the Player may pick up the Gnome, becoming its Owner.} Create a rule entitled "Gnomish Accessories": {Towels are a Currency. Only legal entities can own Towels. Whenever an entity becomes a Player, all Towels in their possession are destroyed and they gain one Towel. There exist Ownable, Transferrable Game Objects called Beer Cans, which have a switch called Empty defaulting to Off. Any Player who possesses a non-Empty Beer Can may Drink it, which causes the Beer Can to become Empty. There exist Unownable Game Objects called Garbage Cans. Each Garbage Can is Resident on exactly one Square. Any player who holds a Gnome and is in a Square containing any Garbage Cans or a Square adjacent to a Square that conatains a Garbage Can may Throw Out a Gnome in eir possession, destroying the Gnome and gaining m5.} Create a rule entitled "Gnome Types": {Whenever a new Gnome type is defined, five Unowned Gnomes of that type are placed on a random Grid Squares whose coordinates are both in the range from -20 to 20 inclusive. There exists an Unownable Game Object called the Gnome Factory. At the beginning of each nweek, the Gnome Factory creates one Gnome of a random type on a random Uncoloured Square whose coordinates are both in the range from -50 to 50 inclusive. The Gnome Factory cannot create Gnomes of any type if there is not already at least one Gnome of that type on the Grid. If there are no Uncoloured Squares or Gnomes on the Grid, the Gnome Factory does not produce a Gnome. /* The Minister of Warfare is responsible for operating the Gnome Factory. */ If a player has more than one non-Amorphous Gnome that is possessed by em, e may mix eir non-Amorphous Gnomes together, which destroys the Gnomes thus mixed and creates a new one. Gnomes may only be mixed as explicitly permitted by the rules. If a player possessess a Gnome and a Beer Can, e may feed the Can to the Gnome, which destroys the Can. If a Gnome is Wet and it is fed a Beer Can, it turns into an Amorphous Blob. At the end of each nweek, each Blob that existed at the beginning of that nweek turns into two non-Amorphous Gnomes of the same type as the Gnome which became the Blob in the first place. One type of Gnome is the Yoyo Gnome. When a Yoyo Gnome is Thrown at a player and is not caught, it returns to the possession of the player who threw it, if one exists. Yoyo Gnomes have 3 uses. There are also Gnomes called Beer Gnomes. Beer Gnomes have three uses. Beer Gnomes may be squeezed by the player holding them to produce a Beer Can owned by that player. When a Beer Gnome runs out of uses, it becomes a Beer Can. There exist Gnomes called Sheep Gnomes. At the beginning of an nweek, if no Sheep Gnomes exist, 8 Sheep Gnomes appear on random Squares whose coordinates are in the range from -50 to 50 inclusive. If a Sheep Gnome appears on the same Square as any player, that player loses 25 Health. Sheep Gnomes do 15 Damage when Thrown. There exist Gnomes known as Bomb Gnomes. Bomb Gnomes do 75 damage and have one use. A player may Squeeze a Bomb Gnome they own to create a Bomb in their possession. Another variety of Gnome is the Ford Prefect Gnome. Ford Prefect Gnomes have one hit point. Ford Prefect Gnomes cannot be created by the Gnome Factory. A player may, at any time, squeeze a Ford Prefect Gnome they hold at the cost of one of the Ford Prefect Gnome's hit points to get a Towel. There exist Mackerel Gnomes. A player may, at any time, squeeze a Mackerel Gnome they hold to gain m3. There exist Basic Gnomes, British Gnomes, and Alien Gnomes, which have no special properties.} Create a rule entitled "The Wine List": {Three Basic Gnomes can be mixed to create a Gnome of a type selected at random by the player mixing them. A Beer Gnome, a British Gnome, and an Alien Gnome can be mixed to create a Ford Prefect Gnome.} /* It is the intent of the proposal that new Gnome Types will be established with combinations thereof appearing in the Wine List rule. Most formulae in the olden days only called for two Gnomes, but the better ones were many two-Gnome steps long. */ Create thrice an Insane Number of Unowned Basic Gnomes on random Unoccupied squares chosen by the Minister of the Grid whose coordinates are both in the range from -50 to 50 inclusive. Create a Towel in the possession of each Player. Create Garbage Cans on every square whose coordinates are both multiples of fifteen in the range from -90 to 90 inclusive.} Note that there are not originally any non-Basic gnomes, nor can the Gnome Factory create any.
