Hmmm true. So we make moves without really knowing what we've purchased or where they are, necessarily... Interesting. Confusing. But indeed, one can't capture one's own piece. One also can't capture a piece accidentally using a pawn, since pawns move in cardinal directions when just moving, but in diagonal directions when capturing.
