No, because they aren't "tunnels", they're just open space. So one could make a "ground level map", where . is empty and X is filled, and it might look like this:
. . X X X . . X X . X X . X X . X . . . . . X X X X X X X .The only thing Digging does is turn one of the Xs into .s; if a Mound is all .s, it collapses.
