You're thinking of a bear trap. A tiger trap is really just a pit, often with unpleasant things at the bottom, such as sharp rocks, wooden stakes, or cards with Xs on them; as such, it's not hard to imagine a mole creating one.
The thing with the cards is not really any more complex or silly than the attacking mechanism; in fact, it's really the same thing, with a few modifications to allow for more damage with increased chance of avoiding the trap.
Maybe it should be a deadfall trap (where the passage of a creature results in a large weight falling); this would lend credibility to the idea that putting more in it makes it hurt more.
A pit trap could then be something boring, like "When a mole steps on a pit trap, it loses a hit point".
