That would work out just fine. Even though I am opposed to even that kind of 'puppetry', giving anyone the power of more than one player, it would work.

I would be very hesitant to put anything resembling that in my automation script. I would have absolutely no idea what might then be asked of me.

I would never give anyone control over me, and I'm not suprised in the least that you are just as hesitant. But you wanted to know "what if I had to have them do something right away?". I would say tough, why should you be so special that you get to take advantage of the opportunity? However, you wanted a way, and there's a way. And if you were going to use them to exploit something, wouldn't you need pretty big leeway to do what you wished with them anyway? Or at least real good control over their points and BNS, which players are just as unlikly to give up.

At least with charters, what would be asked of a member is there in plain sight, so that when someone joins the society e knows what might be asked of em, and eir joining implies consent. Even if the charter is changed, since it is a public document said change isn't going to come secretly.

I fail to see how that's any different from "Whenever M-Tek asks me to do something, I do it if I can". M-Tek will only ask its members to do things as regulated by the charter. If you don't want the society asking its members to do just anything, change the charter to say "M-Tek only asks its members to do the following, and only when these conditions are met:", and follow with things like "M-Tek asks its members to give it 5 points at the beginning of each nweek".

Yes, specific permissions rather than blanket permissions can be put in members' automation scripts. But should the requirements of the society change, that would mean each member would have to modify eir automation script (assuming e decided to remain a member), rather than a single change being made at the charter level.

Completly covered in my above example. Amend the charter to ask its members to do something else, and the members' automation scripts automatically cover it.

The tone of your text suggests you're going to try to get rid of it again. If it's not an immediate problem for you, and if players are content with it being in place, why do you have such a bug up your butt about it?

It's an instability. It opens up all sorts of bad possibilities for Screwing With Time, which is a Bad Thing?. If someone does something as a result of a society forcing them to, they can, at a later date, say "Oh! I didn't do that! I left the society instead!" Therefore screwing with time, as it changes past events.

And fixing such things is a part of the Benevolent Activist philosophy. :)

If you think I'm trying to get rid of your control over and life support of Iain, I'm not, at least not with the societies thing. Dave just made the prop to remove Iain completly, and that should take care of it. As far as I can tell, Iain's gone, just as gone as any of the other players who've met Garbage Collection. And unless I hear a reason for him avoid it, then why should be excepted? I wouldn't mind him hanging around if he were watching idly, planning to rejoin at some point perhaps. But do we know that?
