Oh, it does a little more than that.  Not only does it keep Things from overlapping, it makes it that much more likely that Things, once they do bounce off each other, will hit players. (Yes, I know, 400 units, but still a few rocks will go a long way.  Especially if the football rule gets passed...What happens if one team chips in and buys enough big rocks to block the other team's endzone?)

It also keeps a Player's score from going into the negative, and makes a way for a Player to be ejected from the grid.  Which will become important as the grid fills, because the changes say the Player can't re-enter if the grid is too full.  There may well be a time in the future when one Player has to wait on entering the grid until another Player gets ejected from it.  That's gotta lead to some fun.
