[eia] recovering from hardware failure

On Thursday, my server experienced a near-catastrophic hardware failure
(the power supply fan died, which led to a heat build up that killed
one of the hard drives). It's been rather non-trivial getting it back
to working order, since it's 5500 miles away. I think we're mostly out
of the woods now...
