JJ, Jason, and I played a reasonable chunk of the 1812 campaign in which I played France, JJ played GB, and Jason played Russia. As France, I did indeed choose to go after Moscow for exactly the reason JJ suggests. I knew that Russia could get British help defending St. Petersburg (by sea) much more easily than they could get British help defending Moscow. So I went for Moscow. Mike indicates that this would never happen, but I'm here to tell him that it would.
Secondly, from a game design perspective, perhaps the vulnerability of St. Petersburg is there to help nudge Russia toward alliance with Britain. ??
I do agree with Mike that it seems strange that having a redundant capital is a liability for Russia rather than an asset. And I think it is unfortunate that Mike made all his decisions, political and military, in ignorance of this rule. Most of us have misunderstood the rules at one point or another so far in this game - probably me more than anybody else. Unfortunately, the one time Mike has misunderstood the rules, the misunderstanding has been a doozy. I hope that we can play through and that circumstances will right themselves eventually...
