Indeed.  Conway's life is interesting because of the nonintuitive and
chaotic means in which it behaves.  Perhaps something more like Ataxx
would be a better place to start?  It lends itself to adding new rules
in ways that don't potentially destroy the whole "ecosystem" in the
way that might happen to Conway's life.
