Hey, everyone. Here's what happened:

SBC is systematically incompetent. SBC botched my move order in such a way
that was indistinguishable (for me) from everything working properly, and
then decided to fix it by switching me to dynamic IPs without notifying me
first. They don't have any method of correcting their errors other than
starting the whole process over, which in this case means that they had to put
in a completely new DSL order, with the accompanying wait. They even sent out
a tech to my new apartment to do line tests, despite the fact that my DSL
worked fine for two weeks---which fact should have obviated the need for such
tests. I spent 11 hours on the phone to get this worked out with them.

I would not put up with this if not for the fact that they have a near
monopoly in Madison on what they're selling me, and I certainly don't intend
to give them a dime for the installation fee. I've given some thought to
taking them to small claims court if they won't waive the fees associated
with this. If SBC were an individual and we were still in the 18th century,
I'd probably challenge SBC to a duel.

Anyway, I'm still waiting for SBC to reverse delegate my IP block in DNS,
so your mileage may vary with receiving mail from the list.
