I've had seven or eight drives suffer mechanical failure on me since 1998,
but never two drives simultaneously. That's why I back up scylla and
charybdis to each other nightly. MTBF for drives I own is about one year,
though the current crop is doing significantly better.

I also dd'd to my root partition once by accident. No physical damage
to the drive, but I was sure glad I had a backup.
