When I did run "sh startup.sh", I got the following:

startup.sh: command not found: ^M [7]
startup.sh: command not found: ^M [10]
startup.sh: command not found: ^M [32]

So, I opened up the script in pico, deleted whitespace above those lines, 
and then put it back in again.

It works, sort of. Other scripts that this one references seem to have 
similar problems. Nuts.
